King Pandu, a mighty warrior and ruler of a kingdom had two wives. One of the wive's name was Kunti. Kunti was of celestial being. Her mother was a nymph and her father was a holy brahmin. She was gifted the ability to compel the love of a celestial being. One day, Kunti called to Surya, the god of the sun, with her celestial earings, and became the mother of his son. Her son's name was Karna, and he had the eyes of lion and shoulders of bull.

Because Kunti felt shame, she proceeded to conceal her new born babe. She wrapped him up into soft sheets, placed him into a basket, and sent the basket afloat on the river. The basket floated far and eventually came to the country of Agna. When the basket arrived at the river bank, a women named Radha and her husband Adhiratha found him. They had taken him in and thought of him as a blessing sent from the gods. They had always wanted a child but were never able to obtain a son. They adopted and cherished Karna. He grew up to be a young, powerful, and mighty bowman.
