Gandhari became pregnant with Dritarashtra's child. However, when she gave birth, she gave birth to a lump of flesh that had no life in it. Gandhari was upset because she had expected to mother 100 sons. In a chamber within the Hastinapur palace, Vyasa divided the lump into a hundred pieces and places each individual piece in its own vat of oil. Gandhari's children began to develop within the vats. Because Dritarashtra was blind and Gandhari blindfolded herself, they could not see what everyone else saw in regards to their children. When the vats broke, their oldest son, Duryodhana, looked demonic, along with the rest of the hundred sons.
