Reading Notes: Ramayana Part B
Ramayana
Bibliography. Tiny Tales from the Ramayana Part B by Laura Gibbs
Dashratha is forced into exiling Rama by the manipulation of Kaikeyi and her maid. When this happened, Rama did not protest and was joined by his wife Sita and Lakshmana. They wandered away and crossed the river. During the first night of exile, Rama and his wife Sita were asleep while Lakshmana watched over them. As he was keeping watch, the goddess of sleep, Nidra-Devi, came to visit him. She told him that he needed to sleep, but Lakshmana explained he couldn't because he must protect his brother and his wife. Instead the goddess of sleep went to Lakshmana's wife Urmila. Urmila agreed and for long periods of time in exile, she was asleep day and night for her husband; he did not need to rest. I found that small passage interesting to read. It was the 55th one, titled "Lakshmana guards Rama and Sita". After the exile, Dashratha was consumed by a lot of guilt and grief. He was unable to leave his bed and in the morning was dead.
